Elias Jones was born on 10 April 1807 at Selattyn, Shropshire, he was the son of Thomas and Catherine Jones. On 4 April 1837 he married Mary Jackson at Selattyn, her father was Thomas Edge Jackson a farmer. Mary had been born in Penley. By 1840 Elias was the schoolmaster at Marchwiel schoolhouse which was close to the Rectory on Woodhouse Lane, he was also the vestry clerk in later years.
In 1851 the couple were in Barthomley near Wybunbury, Cheshire, Elias was a school master and Mary was a governess. They must have been living in Marchwiel for some time as there were 3 children who had been born there. William Henry 10, Edgar J 5 and Louisa M who was 3. Mary`s father Thomas Edge was also with them, he was now 80.
Elias was there for about 10 years before returning to Marchwiel.
They were back in Marchwiel by 1861, only two of their children were at home, William Henry who was a book keeper at Kings Mills and Louisa M.
By 1871 Elias had left the school and was a brewers clerk, he and Mary were at 2 Albert Street in Wrexham. Their son Edgar was with them, he was a gardener. By 1881 Elias was a gardener and only Mary and their grandson Albert Robert were at home. They remained in Albert Street and on January 23 1882 Elias died aged 73. An obituary was published in the Wrexham Advertiser.
DEATH OF MR ELIAS JONES, OF HIGHTOWN. By the death of Mr Elias Jones, of Hightown, which took place at his residence, Albert-street, on Monday, at the ripe old age of 73, we lose quite an important local link between the present and past generation in matters educational. Deceased was appointed master of the Marchwiel National Schools by the late Rev. John Henry Montague Luxmore, at a period when Government Inspection of Schools was looked upon as an undue interference with the liberty of the subject, when codes and revised codes were unknown to teachers, and the measurement of the mental progress of the pupils by standards had never dawned even on education departments. Deceased was always a favorite with Mr Luxmore, and he could give graphic and detailed descriptions of the lively quarrels which took place in Marchwiel parish about forty years ago, between the squire of the parish and its spiritual head, the former of whom was then M.P. for the Denbighshire Boroughs. Mr Jones, owing to his steady and temperate habits throughout life was, we are happy to state, able to spend the latter years of his life in comparative ease and comfort.Wrexham Advertiser
Mary died the following year on 2 September 1883 aged 76.
Also buried in the same grave is William Henry their son who died at Guy’s Hospital, London, on 28 August 1888.
William Henry had married Lucy Griffiths in 1863 at Hatfield. Lucy was from Ludlow. They returned to Wrexham and he worked as a corn miller’s clerk, by 1881 he was a corn traveller in the wine and spirit trade. Why William Henry died in London is a mystery, he could have been there as part of his job. In 1891 Lucy was with her sister in Malpas but hasn`t been found after then.
Another son in the same grave is Thomas Elias Jones.
Thomas Elias was baptised 5 November 1837 at Selattyn. In early 1861 he married Margaret Allman who was from Bangor is y Coed , she was the daughter of John and Susan Allman and in the 1861 census the couple are lodging in Hampstead where he was a joiner.
By 1871 they are in John Street, Wrexham with a 7 year old son Edgar. They remained in the same street for quite a long time, Edgar was a gas fitter, his father was still a joiner and another son William Edward had been born, he was 7 in 1881. In 1901 they were in Earle Street, Thomas Elias is still working, his son Edgar the gas fitter had married but his wife had died, and William Edward is a bricklayer. Thomas Elias died in Earle Street on 18 January 1902, he was aged 64. Margaret died in 1917 aged 80.
